What happens? The plot and structure of the play.
Monarchy: James I, Duncan, Macbeth and Malcolm, and the themes of ambition, power and kingship.
Context: Macbeth considered within the culture of the 17th century and why it continues to appeal to audiences in the 21st century.
The Genre of Tragedy: Macbeth as the Tragic Hero.
Women and Power: Lady Macbeth, the witches and the theme of the supernatural.
Language: Imagery, symbolism and motifs.
Other characters: The function of Banquo and Macduff within the play.
Exam technique: Approaching examination questions, essay planning and sample answers.
