• ARTS | Higher Level | Full Time | Grinds Unlike most other subjects, most of the marks for Leaving Certificate Art have been awarded by the time the June exams come around. Students complete a project, worth 50% of their overall mark over a twelve-week period, usually completing in April. The written paper in Art History in June features lots of choice on the paper and is worth 37.5%. In Hewitt College, students get the opportunity to spend lots of time working on their project, improving drawing skills, while written homework for the Art History paper is assigned and corrected throughout the year.
  • CONSTRUCTION STUDIES | Higher Level | Full Time Construction Studies is a “hands-on” subject, which involves working with tools and machinery on materials like wood, metals and plastic. It is the study of buildings and the built environment. Examination of the subject has three components; a practical exam, (allocated 25% of the overall marks), a student project (allocated 25% of the overall marks) and a theory-based examination sat in June, as part of the main timetabled Leaving Certificate examinations. The final examination investigates topics such as heat and thermal effects, illumination and substructure/superstructure. This is an excellent subject for a practically-minded student who has a keen interest in buildings. The theory is not complex and relates to examples taken from everyday life. Having studied Woodwork at Junior Certificate level is an advantage but is not necessary. This is a very achievable course to cover in one year. Construction Studies is also a popular choice for students as an extra subject. Complementary Subjects: Art, Design and Communication Graphics, Home Economics (as there is a Home Design elective).
  • ENGLISH | Leaving Cert | Junior Cert | Higher & Ordinary Level | Full Time | Courses English is a core subject, required to fulfil entry requirements for college. Higher English can be intensive, due to the extensive nature of the course, which includes poetry, reading comprehension, essay writing and a comparative study of three pieces of literature|film. Written work is assigned and corrected our experienced teachers and State Examination correctors. Complementary subjects: History, Religion, Politics and Society (available from September 2019).
  • FRENCH | Leaving Cert Higher & Ordinary Level | Junior Cert Higher | Full Time | Grinds | Courses French is nationally, by far the most popular choice as a third language with almost 26,000 students choosing French as their foreign language for Leaving Certificate in 2018. We pride ourselves in Hewitt College on the excellence of our modern languages departments. You will be taught by Leaving Certificate textbook author Patricia McGrath, and all full-time students have weekly one-to-one French oral classes with our native-speaking French tutor, Antoine Madiot. In Hewitt College, there is no blocking of subjects, and students may study any or a combination of French, German and Spanish. Japanese and Italian may also be facilitated on a private basis.    
  • GERMAN | Leaving Cert Higher Level | Junior Cert Higher Level | Full Time | Grinds | Courses German is the second most popular European language, and is growing in popularity. Like French, the examination consists of an oral exam, an aural section and a written examination. German is a popular choice at Hewitt College and our students perform at the highest level in Leaving Certificate. In Hewitt College, there is no blocking of subjects, and students may study any or a combination of French, German and Spanish. Japanese and Italian may also be facilitated on a private basis.
  • HOME ECONOMICS | SOCIAL & SCIENTIFIC | Leaving Cert Higher | Full Time | Grinds | Courses In Hewitt College, Home Economics is a popular option for both our male and female students. The course is divided into two sections; the project, (20%) and the written examination in June. The project is completed in 5th Year which allows our students to focus solely on the written examination in 6th year. It is a broad and practical course which has a wide range of topics, including home studies, resource management, consumer studies and social studies thus catering for many students. The elective chosen in Hewitt College is Sociology. Note : the elective will not be examined in 2021. While this subject can be studied in one year, the submission date of early November for the journal is by far the earliest of all the practical projects. Our 5th year students in Hewitt College will have the majority of the project completed in 5th year, which takes great pressure off. Complementary subjects: Biology, Business, Construction (Home Design elective).  
  • Irish | Leaving Cert Higher & Ordinary Level | Junior Cert Higher | Full Time | Grinds | Courses Irish is a compulsory subject at Leaving Certificate Level. Here at Hewitt College, students have regular one-to-one oral classes with members of the Irish department so that they can maximise their potential in the Oral Examination, worth a massive 40%. As well as course work classes, they also have weekly aural classes. Our 6th year teacher, Ms Elaine Hammond, is an experienced State Examination corrector and Oral Examination Examiner. Written work is regularly assigned, corrected and returned.
  • MATHS | Leaving Cert Higher  | Junior Cert Higher | Full Time | Grinds | Courses With the introduction of 25 bonus CAO points for a score greater than 40% in higher maths, the number of students choosing to continue maths at higher level has increased significantly. At Hewitt College, very few students drop back to ordinary level, success rates are high, and most importantly, our students have a firm grasp of mathematical concepts. This is vital to their education and future career prospects, as many of our students will pursue STEM college courses. As there is no restriction on subject choices at Hewitt College, students that are interested in Science and STEM subjects may choose all or any of the following: Agricultural Science, Applied Maths, Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Physics. Complementary subjects: Applied Maths, Physics, DCG.

  • MUSIC | Leaving Cert Higher | Full Time | Grinds | Courses This is a popular option, particularly for students who sing and|or play one or more instruments to a high level. Most students opt for 50% evaluation for Performance, however, the combined option of Music technology (25%) and Performance (25%) is also available to our students in Hewitt College. In June, students sit two papers, a Listening Paper (25%), a 90-minute long test on four set works, Irish music and general listening skills and a Composition Paper (25%), a 90-minute long test on Melody writing and harmony. Hewitt College has a beautifully toned Yamaha piano for practice and practicals.
  • POLITICS & SOCIETY | Leaving Cert Higher |  Grinds | Courses Politics & Society is a new Leaving Cert subject, which was first examined in June 2018. Politics & Society is a great Leaving Certificate subject to take if you have an interest in areas such as Law, Politics, Sociology, History, Geography, English, Anthropology, Sustainable Development, Philosophy, or Media Studies. Assessment: The subject assessment consists of a final written examination worth 80% of the marks made up of three sections (short questions, data analysis, and two short essays) and a coursework component, a Citizenship Project Report, worth 20% of the marks available for the subject. Course Topics:It is a broad course which has a wide range of topics, including sustainable development, globalization, multiculturalism, gender equality, political and social theories, understanding executive branches, and human rights. Research Project: Students will begin work on the project in March of 5th year. The development of the research project will typically move through a number of stages: Design stage, Data collection stage (in which learners will collect data such as administering surveys, carrying out interviews, or detailing observations), Data analysis stage, and finally the Write-up stage. Complementary subjects: Geography, English, and History.  
  • SPANISH | Leaving Cert Higher | Full Time | Grinds  We pride ourselves in Hewitt College on the excellence of our modern languages departments. You will be taught by our experienced Spanish teacher, Maria Martinez Galvez. Written work is corrected and returned on a weekly basis. In Hewitt College, there is no blocking of subjects, and students may study any or a combination of French, German and Spanish. Japanese and Italian may also be facilitated on a private basis.
